Tree Destroys Playground

A large Cottonwood tree has shaded the playground beside the administrative offices and classroom building at Mi Escuelita Preschool’s Crossover site at 4231 Maple Avenue for many years.  The rains on June 10th saturated the ground so much that the tree uprooted and fell on June 11th.  Fortunately school was out and no students were at the school.

"It was weird, it was so calm. There wasn't any wind or anything. It was just sunny out," Associate Director of Technology and Design Robert Leal said.

Employees reported hearing a loud noise and feeling the floor shake when it happened. The tree touched power lines when it fell but the tree was so wet that it just smoldered and did not burst into flames.  The fire department arrived shortly after the incident was reported and monitored the situation.

The playground structure below the tree was crushed, the corner of the building was damaged, and the air conditioning system has been damaged.  Staff are assessing the damage and estimating repair costs.
