    Objectives

    • Provide parents at selected sites with access to English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to improve their English language skills

    • Provide parents with training that will empower them to participate in their child’s education and improve their parenting skills.

In the Parent Training Component, Mi Escuelita works with each parent on an individual basis. Parents meet with a Mi Escuelita Family Advocate and complete a Family Partnership Agreement to set their goals and determine the classes and resources that will help them meet those goals. The Family Advocate follows up with the parents on a weekly basis to help them follow their plan. Given the number of local agencies providing GED classes, parents are referred to one of these agencies for these classes. To facilitate parent participation, ESL classes are offered on-site at selected Mi Escuelita sites and childcare is offered for children who are enrolled at Mi Escuelita and their siblings. Parent participants in ESL courses are assessed pre and post participation using the Basic English Skills Test (BEST Plus) measurement tool. ESL classes are taught by staff and volunteers using the Steck-Vaughn Real Life English curriculum.
