Objectives

• Provide children with a foundation of developmental and educational skills that will allow them to take full advantage of educational opportunities and succeed academically

• Teach children a diverse oral language vocabulary, giving them the foundation necessary for reading effectively

• Increase children’s awareness of the alphabet and the written word

• Improve children’s English language skills

Mi Escuelita has developed a specialized curriculum designed to meet the needs of low income children whose native language is not English. This scientifically based curriculum provides language intervention along with daily math, science, reading, music and art activities. Mi Escuelita uses a combination of two leading curriculums (Scholastic’s Building Language for Literacy and Scholastic’s Early Childhood Curriculum) combined with new practices geared toward second language learners. This curriculum coupled with the parental and family literacy components gives children an even stronger basic skill set before they enter the formal educational environment.

• Children are tested at the beginning of the school year, mid-year, and at the end of each school year using the Learning Accomplishment Profile (LAP 3), a nationally used and recognized tool to measure a child’s developmental gains.
• Children are exposed daily to age-appropriate activities and instruction that build their oral vocabulary and their ability to communicate effectively in English.
• Children are assessed at the end of each thematic unit (which may range from 3-6 weeks) for vocabulary and letter recognition using the Scholastic Unit Assessment Tools.
